University of Oxford partners with Aioi R&D Lab – Oxford to support the next generation of AI experts in tackling real-world challenges
Graduates can spend up to ten weeks working on live industry-led projects across Machine Learning, Robotics and Vision, Control and Verification and Cyber-Physical Systems.
The Aioi R&D Lab – Oxford has partnered with the University of Oxford to provide a unique opportunity to transform academic research in Artificial Intelligence (AI) into industry applications designed to benefit society.
Already a leading institution in AI research, the University of Oxford launched its Autonomous Intelligent Machines and Systems (AIMS) Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT), based in the Department of Engineering Science, in 2014 to support graduates in developing the next generation of AI technology.
The four-year full-time course combines both practical and theoretical work, with the Aioi R&D Lab – Oxford offering a ten-week internship opportunity to students. During that time, they will work on live AI technology industry-led projects across four key research themes: Machine Learning; Robotics and Vision; Control and Verification, and Cyber-Physical Systems.
Professor Michael Osborne, Director of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Autonomous Intelligent Machines and Systems, Co-founder of Oxford spinout Mind Foundry, and member of the Advisory Board at the Aioi R&D Lab – Oxford said:

The types of projects that students work on can vary wildly, from using machine learning algorithms to produce influential papers on the effectiveness of different Covid-19 interventions, to leveraging their knowledge of AI to investigate the moon’s shadows, and track sea turtles in Cape Verde.”

The Aioi R&D Lab – Oxford is a joint venture between Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance (ANDI), Aioi Nissay Dowa Europe (AND-E) and its AI partner, Mind Foundry. Key R&D projects the Lab is focusing on include developing tailored insurance solutions for autonomous vehicles to promote safer and more sustainable driving practices and leveraging AI to detect early signs of cognitive decline in older drivers. This is hoped to be particularly impactful in lowering road traffic fatalities in countries with ageing populations, like Japan and the United Kingdom.
